They are best when less than 20 litres per day is required.   The plate set weighs 500 gms.  Container volume < 4 litres*, weight < 200 gms*.  The life of the plate set is typically 12,000 litres for 200 NTU muddy water†.

 

Suitable if you wish to clean up the very poor quality tap water supplied to your residence, or if your supply water is contaminated by arsenate or industrial/mining/ chemical/septic/sewer spills, and when mains electricity is regularly available.  

 

Well suited to solo or dual travellers, aid workers and similar in sunny regions.  The solar panel will only recharge the battery pack at the rate of about 10 litres per day.  

 

Hikers and campers, aid agencies to assist residents in urban and rural regions during floods.  About 1 – 2 minutes winding required for each litre to be cleaned (depends upon pollution loading).  They are an ideal reserve for civil defence and aid agencies.  In an emergency, these can be distributed to affected residents who can then prepare their own water.  Weighing about the same as 1.25 litre of water, they can enable residents to get tens of litres of good quality water per day for days, weeks (or years if necessary).

 

Caravaners, off road motorists/ motor cyclists, where the water has not had any salt contamination.

 

Off road motorists or motor cyclists getting adventurous, eg, muddy brackish coastal ponds; or wishing to give aid in ocean affected regions, eg a recent coastal cyclone or Tsunami.
