When should I use a Clarifier?
When the water is muddy with a little bacteria/pathogen contamination. This is your typical inland muddy waterway, where there is very little chemical/industrial/mining pollution. It also includes flood water in rural areas.
When the water only needs to be cleaned up “a little”
As a camper, why shouldn’t I just use a filter?
Filters are fine if the water is already clear, or you can see a couple of meters through it. They will do a good job. But when the water is muddy, your filter will clog with the fine clay after only a few litres. These Clarifiers just keep working and working, no matter how muddy is the water! They allow you to camp and have safe water in many areas you wouldn’t consider before, because the water was too muddy.
How do I know the water is adequately treated?
If the water starts out muddy or discoloured, it is adequately treated when it becomes clear. If it is not clear, it needs further treatment. Press the Operate button again. If it is still not clear after a second go, the water may not be suitable for drinking.
Do these Clarifiers do away with the need for filters?
Mechanical filters, mostly yes! Activated carbon filters, no! Mechanical filters are faster at treating small volumes of relatively clean water. As soon as the water is slightly muddy, or you wish to get a few litres at one time, our clarifiers are superior. Passing the water through an activated carbon filter may be required to remove any residual odour or taste in the water.
There is a wide range of pollutant levels in the water. How do these Clarifiers know when to stop?
The Clarifiers stop after a given time, somewhere between 3 and 90 minutes. You can leave it set on maximum and it will clean the water well. However it could finish up using vastly more electricity and plate material than is otherwise needed. To obtain maximum efficiency, the operator should set this time. This is easily done by watching/timing the process in action. When the water goes clear, press the stop button. Then adjust the timer back to about the time taken to get the water clear. Next time you use it, it will automatically stop at that time.
Although this may seem complex, it is no different from choosing the filter you need for your situation. With filters you make the choice at the time you purchase it. If you got the wrong one, it is a long way to go back and get another one. In the case of the Clarifier, you make the adjustment where you are in a few seconds. Much easier!
How does the Clarifier disinfect the water?
Primarily by removing the pathogens – typically about 99% of them go this way. In its disinfection process – its final stage – it interrupts most pathogen’s cell motility process, killing them. The longer the water stands after treatment (up to 12 hours), the higher the pathogen destruction rate.
